Are You Saying I Can Host My Own Radio Program?
Yes! KFOK Community Radio welcomes any resident of the Georgetown Divide (or beyond) who is committed to regular attendance and has a cooperative spirit.
Don’t I Need Broadcasting Expertise?
Operating the broadcast console and the other studio equipment may seem challenging at first, but we provide you with all the education and mentorship you require. You operate everything yourself, and cue your media, but all it takes is a little training and some preparation—no advanced technical skill is necessary. After a few shows, you’ll feel right at home.
Who Decides What I Play or Talk About on My Show?
At KFOK, program hosts select the subject matter and content of their shows. The radio station management has no authority over music or topic selection and restricts only content that violates Federal Communications Commission regulations and/or community standards. You control your program.
What Types of Programming Can I Do?
Before you complete your application, check this website’s Broadcast Calendar to become familiar with our current range of programming, and be specific about the type of music or the community-affairs topic you wish to present.
Music Programming
We have a small library of music to draw on, but we expect broadcasters of music programs to provide most or all of their own music. (You may also ask the music director to request complimentary music from record companies.) You may play mp3 files, CDs, cassettes, or records, or you may play music or other recordings directly from the Internet.
Community-Affairs Programming
KFOK is especially interested in expanding its range of news and information programming, talk shows, and educational programs. If you have an area of expertise and/or interest, be sure to let us know.
Hybrid Programming
You are welcome to offer a hybrid of music and talk. Some of our broadcasters offer a mix of music and discussion.
So, What’s the Catch?
Donation
Yes, we do ask a little of you in return for the privilege of being on the air. We are a nonprofit operation, and broadcasters are expected to pay annual membership dues of $25—though more is welcome. (We also request a onetime training fee of $25 when you learn how to use the studio equipment.) In addition, we ask you to commit to volunteering for a certain number of hours depending on how much time you spend on the air.
Service Commitment
Before you apply, please note that KFOK is a cooperative operation with an all-volunteer staff that requires the participation of all broadcasters in performing management and staff duties, serving on committees, and assisting with events and other initiatives. Our broadcasters’ handbook, which you will receive by email when you apply, provides more details about this service commitment.

We prefer that you return the form to us by email. That way, the KFOK Program Committee can review your application immediately rather than wait to distribute copies at our next meeting. (The annual membership dues and onetime training fee will be collected only after you are approved, when you train for broadcasting.)
The committee will review your application and notify you about it soon thereafter. If your application is approved, we will email you documents to review, and we will schedule training and internship sessions so that you can be on the air soon.
If you have any questions or comments, please email us.
